“What You Need To Know About Organic Superfoods” Part 1/5

Jul 10, 2017 | Family Health, Food Facts, Nutrition & Diet, Plant Based Diet, Vegan Diet, Vitamins & Minerals, Whole Foods Diet

I’m guessing you’ve come across information about the benefits of organic superfoods.

And if you’re anything like me, you didn’t take much notice.

Look, I’ve always had a ‘careful’ diet, since the days when I was about 12 and really got into fitness.

I stopped having soft drinks, I cut sugar, salt, butter, eggs, and chicken skin out of my diet, along with other things.

I switched from white bread to brown and whole meal, and I stopped drinking coffee.

I think I was a pretty fit and healthy 12 year old.

It was a lonely choice, as none of my friends ever thought about the food they were throwing down every day.

Chips, beans and fried eggs were on nearly everyone’s lunch plate at school.

While I brought my own sandwiches and salads to school…

Strange boy!!

Perhaps…

I can’t even remember who encouraged me to get on this health kick…

But I stuck at it for a long, long time.

It wasn’t until I was about 40 did I start drinking coffee again…

Then just recently I saw a documentary called “What the Health”.

You can find a link to it here: http://www.whatthehealthfilm.com/

And immediately, I’ve decided to learn more about superfoods and include more ‘superfoods’ into my daily diet…

What have I got to lose?

The joys of greasy bacon sandwiches?

I think it’s worth the adventure…

And on this blog I’m going to help you sift through some of the huge amounts of confusing and conflicting information on superfoods so you know where to start.

I want to provide you with the facts before you begin your new, healthier lifestyle.

I think we’re all well aware of the massive problem of obesity…

And I think it’s fair to say many people in the UK thought it was an American problem…

When it hit home to me what was about to occur in the UK was when I was in America in 1995.

I noticed the portion sizes in every restaurant were massive!!

And it was then that I realized that style of eating was going to hit the UK sooner rather than later…

Fast forward 20 years, and you’ll see hundreds of obese people on every major UK high street.

Our diets are killing us…

And if you don’t believe me, watch the movie…

Would you agree that many people think they can make up for their poor diets with a multi-vitamin pill?

Well it seems the market for vitamins and supplements is doing better than ever, according to latest research from Mintel.

Sales of vitamins and supplements increased 3% between 2015 and 2016 to reach £422 million.

Sales are set to increase further this year to easily pass £450 million.

What I find astounding is that almost 50% of all British people scoff daily vitamin and mineral supplements.

Also, Mintel research found that as many as two thirds (65%) of all adults took some form of vitamins or supplement either daily or occasionally in the last 12 months.

Also, according to a report published by Grand View research, the global dietary supplements market size is expected to reach USD 278.02 billion by 2024!!

USD 278.02 billion!!

Are we killing ourselves and know it?

Is this why we think we need a quick fix by shoving a few vitamin pills down our throats?

The National Diet and Nutrition Surveys (NDNS) conducted by the UK Government over the last few decades suggest that our problems are getting worse.

Their surveys reveal that our intake of several vitamins and minerals are below recommended levels, putting significant numbers of adults and children at risk.

The government found for example, that over 90% of UK women had an iron intake below RNI (recommended nutritional intake) and some 50% of men had a vitamin A intake below the RNI.

It’s been known for a long time that our foods are rapidly deteriorating in quality, which is contributing to this worrying trend. It also reveals how some food products are being actively promoted as ‘healthy’ or ‘organic’, when in reality they are anything but.
